Phantom sound card?

  Yes, there is.  ALSA has a kernel module for this, and also tools to
intercept soundstreams and record them to disk.  Or at least, claims to.  
The docs for ALSA tends to be a bit erratic.  But at least you have
somewhere to start looking...
