Yea, ran into this two weeks ago when setting it up on my box.
Don't use /etc/aliases, and be sure to read the README.Debian and
README.EXIM documentation that comes with Mailman.

I'm using sarge, so there might be a few changes (I'm using Exim 4), but
the docs are good for exim3 and 4.
