If you can play it with mplayer, you should be able to record it by 
using the mpegpes or pcm audio output drivers:

    mplayer -ao mpegpes http://server.fqdn/path/to/stream.foo

to write the audio to an mp2 audio file, or 

    mplayer -ao pcm http://server.fqdn/path/to/stream.foo

to write the audio to an WAV file.
