I think you might be able to do that if you back groups (via PAM) with 
OpenLDAP instead of /etc/groups.  I haven't done it myself, just 
remember reading something that sounds similar.  Granted, it's a leap 
of faith to do it (I wonder if you can do a rotate-group ala 
rotate-root for failsafe).
