Confusing hardware issue

I assume this is an ALSA sound setup, so have you tried running alsamixer from 
a shell to see all the channels available? It's plausible I'd say that 
there's a different mixer channel for the earphones that just isn't up or is 
muted for one reason or another and maybe whatever you normally use for 
mixing just hides that channel.
