Confusing hardware issue

Thanx for the suggestion to both of you. It is ALSA. I will try out
alsamixer next time I am up in that environment. I am not very familiar w/
ALSA ( it's always "just worked" for me in the past ) and didn't really know
what tools exist to exercise the system more directly.
