Well, it may be able to read ok, but it sure still does not write ok.  
Did another k3b burn - average speed was 0.3x on a +R disk.
This was after using the following options on hdparm:

hdparm -X66 -c3 -u1 -d1 /dev/hdc

I'll buy some different media, maybe some -R stuff.

Here is something, I am running k3b under my user account.  When it 
first pops up k3b says:

cdrdao will be run without root privileges
It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root privileges 
to increase the overall stability of the burning process.
Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem.

Of course there is no info on how to actually configure cdrdao to do 
this.  At least last night google was not my friend :(  All the websites 
I visited did not say how to configure cdrdao.  cdrdao --help wasn't too 
useful either.

Other than that, I'm stumped.  Maybe the machine is a candidate for the 
next meeting?  Can someone help me carry some of the stuff in?
