direct BIOS access from Linux?

I know this is a feature long desired by anyone who has every admin'ed
a box with a FORTH-based boot PROM.  But does anyone know if x86-based
hardware and BIOSes have made *any* advance in this area in the last
5-20 years ?

Currently I'm looking for a way to clear the DMI logs without having
to reboot the system to access the BIOS settings.  Google doesn't seem
to enlightening here.

I expect someone will mention Linux BIOS at some point :)
Does anyone have any experience with this?
