I started with 1&1 and had lot's of problems... in terms of the
configuration (broken) support (confused and not knowing what 'setup'
is provided) and performance (ran a single installation of ezPublish
snail-slow...and this was a newly provisioned server that I had to
wait for.) The main one was that I was trying to setup multiple
client accounts and websites, which is done through their
administration tools. I found these tools to be completely
inadequate, and the documentation, FAQs, forums and every form of
support inadequate. I tried a second (supposedly well-regarded by at
least one experienced developer and after checking some website that I
can't recall now where hosts are evaluated) called tektonic and the
results were even worse.
Of course YMMV
I wrote about it on my blog:
(Don't) Get your VPS

quoting myself:
The second point I wish to make is that VPS still works through a
control panel. If you like the idea of having root on a box, and also
enjoy the prospects of playing root in a blindfolded labyrinth of
quicksand, then VPS could be great for you.
