'ethtool -d eth0' may help in determining if the PHY
in fact is in half duplex while the remote end
advertises something else.

I had an ethernet MAC fail a motherboard mounted
device. Ethereal indicated that most frames were
transmitting Check sum errors. TCP only very weird,
not really worth while to debug much further than that
for the cost of a 20$ pci ethernet card.

PPPOE is not involved here? I've seen lots of MTU
problems with PPPOE links.
