I found the Secure Digital Host Controller project at
http://mmc.drzeus.cx/wiki/Controllers/SDHCI.  It works for devices of
class 0805 on the PCI bus.  Unfortunately, the controller in my
notebook appears to be hanging off the PCCARD bus rather than the PCI
bus.  Anyway, "lspci -n" doesn't report any devices of class 0805.

I finally got a Crucial USB SD/MMC reader CTR2MMPU2 from Newegg for
$9, which makes it look just like a USB pen drive.
