Er, by "local LDAP tree", so you mean a local replica/copy/whatever
of one LDAP database, or two separate, unrelated LDAP databases? The
former should work fine (or so I'm told). The later would mean you
have two different domains with the same name. That would be bad.

If you're not using WINS, start. It makes NetBIOS name resolution
infinitely more reliable.[1] And WINS will traverse subnets (which I
assume is what the VPN issue is).
[1] Of course, "zero times infinity is still zero", hah hah. But
seriously, deploy WINS. It's just like DNS for NetBIOS, except this
is DNS after you've smoked a whole lot of crack and think a sheet of
paper is the same thing as a tree, 'cause they're both made out of
wood.
