Convoluted?  FAI?  you don't say...               ;->

I got all excited about (the idea of) FAI(*) back in 2002 and for
a while had FAI rigged up in a way that sorta-kinda did what we
needed, but yikes!  at least back then it was no better than my
pile of bash scripts - I ended up having to touch most of FAI to
make it work for us, and (I claim) our lab wasn't anything unusual.

I hope to hear  that FAI has come a long way since then because,
as I said, I liked the idea...


   * FAI == Fully Automated Install  (only for Debian, back then)
