Are you booting locally or over the network?

IIRC, with a network boot you can set the initrd image by MAC address 
as a DHCP option, and so feed the right modules to each machine as 
needed.  It was late-90's that I last attempted such a thing and that 
worked then, so I imagine it ought to be better today.

Anybody know if there's a practical limit to the size of an initrd 
today?   I think it was 2.88MB floppy size at one point.  I'm just 
wondering if Paul can make a single initrd with modules for all of his 
various hardware.
