It sounds like, from the research you and Ted have done, that even an 
honest expo would be popular.  My God, $2M for a booth and "platinum 
sponsorship"?  Maybe they would bite at a $50K booth then.  Can you 
imagine if 10 vendors did and there were still plenty of $2K booths to 
rent to the smaller exhibitors?

I don't see that an Expo Center is at all different than a warehouse 
with a fancy title and bathrooms.  One could rent a lovely warehouse 
north of Boston for that kind of money, even hiring some electricians, 
ushers and rent-a-cops for the week.  Put the catering out to bid, buy 
some insurance - it seems IDG just looks at this like a cash cow.

Combine it with a YAPC, a PyCon, and some Web 2.0 stuff and you start 
to have a better conference than IDG puts on.
