Perhaps you do this (on an isolated network) and generate a lot of other 
traffic to interfere?  A couple machines doing nothing but ping-flooding 
ought to be sufficient.  Certainly, if one of the machines flooding is also 
involved in the connection you are monitoring (either client or server).
