I'd be inclined to agree that Hans would fall into the "too smart to murder"
category.  But you have to admit that the restraining order Nina took out
on him may be an indication of possibly violent temper.

   some thug tricked Nina into getting out of her van, overcame her somehow

--> I <-- think it's most likely that Nina's sitting right now in some
hotel room in Canada, the culprit behind her own disappearance,
watching the news and laughing her Russian ass off that her plan to
get her husband behind bars worked so flawlessly.
