  You might tell us something about the hardware.  :-)  Such as:

- Make and model of server, if any
- If server is a whitebox/DIY job, make and model of motherboard
- Make and model of network card, if they're not built-in to the motherboard
- If possible, details on chipsets are nice to know

  For example, the trouble you describe does sound a lot like the
lockup problems the Broadcom Tigon 3 Ethernet chipset has/had.  I'm
pretty sure you don't have that network chipset, given the driver
you're using, but who knows? :)
