mythinstall fest continued (long ramble)

I am trying to get my myth setup to run correctly. I've got a slightly
different setup than most - so it slightly complicates things. I'm
using the HDHomeRun tuner for my OTA connection. I installed a second
ethernet card just for the HDHomeRun. (I had an extra floating
around.) Ben helped me set up the dedicated dhcphost just for the
tuner. I use a dhcp client connection to my router. Thanks Ben for
helping. I appreciated you flying without a parachute.:) If anyone
recalls, I had what I thought to be an IPv6 issue, which turned out to
be mostly a crappy cable to my router. (I have not re-enabled IPv6.)

I have managed to get hdvideo running in myth, but have somehow messed
something up. When I left the installfest, I did not have any audio. I
found out that was because no one has developed the drivers for my mobo
yet (Intel 965WH). I bought a cheap audio card, the Chaintech AV-710
for $22, and have since set up FC6 to recognize the board. It is a 7.1
card with an optical output. Using the optical interface to my
receiver, I get digital sound.

An aside: For those of you looking for a cheap source of AV cables, I
highly recommend http://www.riteav.com/ . (I have no affiliation. I
have bought from them before and found their product great and their
shipping to be very fast.) Their prices for HDMI / DVI / TOSlink
(optical fibre) are the lowest I've found. 3 ft HDMI cable $4.69. 3 ft
digital optical cable $2.19, 6 ft digital optical cable $2.39. 6 ft DVI
cable $5.39 .

On topic: Somehow I have gotten things awry. When I start the frontend
it complains of not being able to connect to the backend. It asks if
the BE is running. So first things first. Should I log in as user
myth? Run the backend, run mythfilldatabase. Then run the front end?
What should be done normally? Can a startup script be created? What
should be in it?

Before I got the installation messed up, it seemed the tuners were
streaming data when they started up. Then when I tried to connect to
them, I got a message that they were busy. This was after a cold start
of the computer, but the HDHomeRuns had been left on from a previous
session. So they could have been streaming data - but they hadn't been
told to start over cleanly?

I think one can tell from this long ramble that I'm confused on the
subject. Can anyone get me going again? Or point me in the right
direction at least :)
