That's the weird thing... on my wacked out Ubuntu box when it's MUTED then 
audio via spdif works which would seem awfully backwards.  I remembered 
this one specifically because I was at a point where I had everything 
unmuted and still no sound and was ready to throw the thing out the 
window.
