I'm curious, what version of Debian are you installing -- Sarge/Stable or
Etch/Testing?

Though Etch is officially in beta, it's nearing release. Since Debian does
have long release times, there's a big improvement between releases. My
advice at this time would be to install Etch for any new, non-mission
critical install. That alone might solve your problems as the installer has
been significantly improved.

   Debian's documentation <http://www.debian.org/doc/> and/or
<http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual> is extensive, but
that's a double-edged sword if you're trying to find an answer.

Debian's support mailing lists (e.g. "debian-user") tends to be very active
and will prove useful. You can access support via sites like
<http://www.debianhelp.org/> or sign up for mailing lists at
<http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/subscribe>.
