And if they do there are the options of booting into Windows (ick),
two VM products, and now Crossover Office.
It certainly keeps down the 3-hour troubleshooting calls from my
parents. Some of that is the pre-paid 3-year unlimited phone
support, some is the interface, and most I think is due to the UNIX
architecture.
Plus you're supporting open source development, though obviously not
as much as if you were buying hardware from RedHat. (If they sold
hardware).
That said, I also have a friend whose grandmother runs Knoppix
successfully, and she's not computer literate. I think he can ssh in
for support though. The Technology User Group in Portland group
seems to be doing great things with Linux for the low-income folks -
again, they have the group to fall back on for support.
Hmm, there seems to be a trend in the above paragraphs, yet we still
have very few novices coming here for help. That's something to
meditate about...
