Well, it is rather being thrust upon him.  He was hired as the
Networking/Windows IT person.  I've transitioned to a more
development-oriented role, and the decision has been made to take my
sysadmin duties and assign them to his manager's group, which really
means to my friend :)
He's a little overwhelmed, but learns fast.  He seems to rely entirely
too much on his AIM buddy list, which unfortunately contains a few
people who know just enough about Linux to be really dangerous and
cause him more problems than if he were to spend a little more time
researching.
