I've been using fvwm(2), and (cv)twm before that.  My desktop hasn't 
changed significantly since 1994. My desktop is very boring and plain.  
Functionality over form.

I use a  boring plain, sky-blue background, dark-blue xterms w/ yellow 
text, and that's it.

No launchers, trash cans, widgets, etc.  Xterms work fine for all that.
