problem buring iso to external usb dvd

Leaving out "-speed=1" definitely didn't help when I tested.

I can't remember if I tested with "-dvd-compat" out of the command
line.  I will try again tonight.

I never tried this (I've never heard of dvd+rw-format), but I do know
that

  growisofs -M /dev/dvd=/dev/zero

generated an error message that was pretty similar/exact to the error
that I got when I tried to burn an ISO.
