Heh. The phrase "PeeCee architecture" is an oxymoron if ever
there was one, but it's a boon to those who make a living
selling hax that work around its deficiencies. One that
comes to mind apropos this thread is a card called the PC
Weasel (or maybe the Real Weasel?) that you could install in
some machines (hmmmm, maybe only possible with EISA/ISA and
not PCI*, now that I think of it...) where it would do VGA
screen-scraping direct from video RAM and also somehow take
over the role of the keyboard. The card would then translate
screen and keyboard I/O into RS232; it was autonomous and
you could connect to it remotely and even (IIRC) do stuff
like remote resets and power control. A last resort if you
need to do remote admin and your system doesn't support it...
I'm surprised there isn't a product that's basically a webcam
that allows you to watch the screen from a nearby system via
which you could also relay keyboard I/O...
