  Brand and model of laptop?

You mention Gentoo. Have you tried any other distros? Nothing
against Gentoo, but the "build everything yourself" approach means
every Gentoo install is different, which is something of a tech
support nightmare.

What was is doing right before it crashed? That is to say, what
part of the boot process was it in?

ndiswrapper is not the most stable thing in the world. On some
hardware, it frequently causes kernel crashes. One thing you can do
is make sure you have the latest version of ndiswrapper installed, and
then try different versions of the Windows network card driver you're
trying to load.

Is this wireless or Ethernet? Do you know what particular Broadcom
network controller your laptop has?
