Or use Gentoo, one of the few distros that's reasonable in keeping up to
date.

Of all the systems I have, running Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu, Debian, etc, the
Gentoo systems are the easiest to maintain. Some distros (ie, RPM-based)
you need to wait a year or more to use a recent release, and yea often you
need to upgrade your whole OS just to get a new version of something.
