This is why I only update software for three reasons:
 (1) to add new functionality
 (2) to fix vulnerabilities
 (3) as a dependency of 1 or 2

That sounds like your SMTP session (Evolution communicating with your
outgoing mail server) is breaking.  Has your ISP switched to requiring
authentication?  Did any of your "string of updates" update email
Evolution, your MTA, or any of their libraries?
