Need some dovecot/thunderbird pointers.

I'm running dovecot and thunderbird. In my dovecot.conf I have this line:

    mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

If this matters, I'm running sendmail and procmail is sorting multiple 
mail folders inside ~/mail.

When I start tbird, I have an account set up so I can see my inbox in 
/var/mail/steveo, but I don't see any of the files in ~/mail.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to see that stuff?
