I've been using Linux software RAID for a number of years without
any issue that I could blame on it.
(There's a recent thread on this list where I found a mismatch
between mirror members, but my current theory is that is due to how I
installed GRUB.)
Sometimes the drivers for a particular hardware RAID controller can
be unstable, but that's a property of the driver, and is the same for
any other hardware driver that might be subpar. (Broadcom's gig
Ethernet drivers were a source of much frustration for some time, for
example.)
Dell's "PERC" line is almost entirely re-badged AMI/LSI MegaRAID
stuff, which has been in the kernel for years and years, and appears
to be quite solid.
