Actually, my friend, Lara, nailed it (the Google fu is strong with her):
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list had an entry thusly:
inode/directory=vlc.desktop;
I'm guessing this happened when I tried to run VLC on a DVD's hierarchy.
