Since using dd to copy boot .iso images works, I would assume the boot 
record of a hdd would be copied over as well.

Just an assumption, since that's not something I've ever tried.

So long as your sdf has nothing on it of consequence, the worst thing 
that could happen is failure and you go back to your existing sdb.
