For example:

 --- RealPlayer/RP8 [RealOne/RP9 alpha still doesn't work
correctly as a Mozilla1.0 plugin mostly] ---

You will need to manually enter all the mime-type that you find
listed in your $HOME/.mime.types file. Make certain that you
have copied (not sym-linked) "rpnp.so" and "raclass.zip" [from
$HOME/RealPlayer8/] to your $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/ directory
[you will have to create said directory first]. When you create
the mime-type entry in Mozilla, under advanced options tell it to
always use "$HOME/RealPlayer8/realplay" for this type and "do not
ask." Then you will get the automajicity at WEB Sites. Some
sites have an option at first entry to "skip test and configure
myself." Do this, because in many cases it defaults to either
QuickTime or WindowsMedia regardless - as I found with "IFilm."

[SIDENOTE - I am currently experimenting with removing the "swf"
extension, leaving only "rf" for RP8. I figure that having the
current MacroMedia Flash player plugin recognised is enough. I
also use XMMS for mp3 type extentions and sox for wav and au,
although RP8 can play these as well.]

(This all works for a setup with RealPlayer/RP8 installed as
individual rather than system-wide, though it would be somewhat
the same otherwise, but the plugins are copied to your
/usr/local/mozilla/plugins/ directory for example. However, if
you are interested in testing their RealOne/RP9 alpha-version,
you can NOT install RP8 system-wide because they can't co-exist.
You will need to install both as different users.)

The steps are similar to utilize XMMS and the like.
(You can change the entry to say "ask me" if you have different
applications using the same mime-type extension.)

On a related note: There is a new release of MacroMedia Flash
for Linux. It is strongly recommended to upgrade because there
is a serious security vulnerability associated to ALL platforms'
version of Flash. Further information can be found at:

Look under "Linux" "MacroMedia Flash Player" and check in the
righthand column for the link to the description and download URL.
