kernel building question

So I've come to discover!  A make oldconfig worked just fine after 
rm'ing a bunch of the arch dirs, then I rm'ed a bunch of drivers/ 
sub-dirs and everything just blew up.

Since I've got gobs of disk space, I guess I'll just keep the entire 
tree.  It seems to not be worth it to attempt to remove stuff :(
