  Okay, that at least gave me a pretty good idea of what the problem is.
However, their recommended fix is

> specifying Times font after the documentclass command:

>     \usepackage{aaai}
>     \usepackage{times}

which I presume is some LaTeX incantation. All I know about TeX and LaTeX
is that they are used in typesetting, and by LyX, and they're pronounced
funny.  :-)

  LyX already has a UI widget to set the "class" of my file to "article",
which made me think the "documentclass" line is not needed. But I was not
really sure what to do with the other two lines.

  I tried putting the "usepackage" lines in the "LaTeX preamble" in LyX.
That caused the LyX "DVI export" command to fail. Since "aaai" was also the
name of the webhost you referenced, I figured it might be specific to their
files, and so I tried using just the "times" line. That appeared to work.

  I then used their suggested "dvips -Ppdf" command, and eventually
generated a PDF file. Said PDF file, viewed in Acrobat Reader, looked
*much* better, in terms of overall font quality.

  However, there was now a new problem: Every sequence of the characters
"fi" in my document had been replaced a symbol that looked like a cross
between cursive "f" and "l" symbols. (Huh?!?!)

  I went back and dropped the "-Ppdf" from the "dvips" command, and that
seems to have fixed the above, um, behavior, while still keeping the PDF
file looking good.

  Feel free to comment on any of the above, or just accept my thanks for
helping me solve my problem. :-)

  Cheers,
