FWIW, HP has lists of hardware certified with Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake,
etc.

Workstations:

Desktops/Laptops:

I followed one link and had the option to buy an Evo D310 or D315 with
"Mandrake Linux 8.2 Light", or "Premium" for $20 more. Linux is not
preloaded, but the Mandrake CD ships with the box (I assume that the
hard drive is essentially blank). I did a sample configuration of the
Evo D310 with Windows vs. with Linux ("light"), and the price came out
to $579 with Windows vs. $534 with Linux. Note that the comparison was
a little tricky, because by default the Linux box comes with a bigger
hard drive (and is only $5 cheaper than a Windows install).

Go to http://www.hp.com/linux for more.

[ Disclaimer: I work for HP, but have never installed Linux on any
              HP-manufactured systems ]

reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the
illusion of progress while producing confusion, ineffectiveness, and
  demoralization."
