As some have mentioned the BSD do binary emultation like iBCS was used 
to run SCO apps on linux in the earlier days.  (Wordperfect anyone?)

I think SCO now has a linux emulation layer.  Solaris for intel does 
too.  Solaris also has a linux API layer.  It's interesting how things 
have turned around.

Early on, SYSV api stuff was added to linux so they could port the free 
X server someone wrote from SCO Unix and Interactive Unix.  X386 
eventually became XFree86.
