I can't really confirm this happened and I did not study KDE differences
in between 1) Kubuntu and 2) Ubuntu + kubuntu-desktop installed. Lately
I was using the latter only. I need Gnome occasionally too.

It's certainly not Gnome-only. At least Breezy and Dapper. Can't tell
much about Warty, but that's history now.
