Sound card recommendations?

   This is something that puzzles me (as I just went through some quick 
research to buy a motherboard and wound up making a poor choice): why isn't 
there a decent index of Linux-friendly hardware (and vendors)?

   The best thing I could find is <http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/>, but 
even that leaves a lot to be desired.
