Confusing hardware issue

Woo hoo!!! Thanx much. That's all it was. I didn't find alsamixer very
intuitive to "turn on" the earphone output ( I was adjusting the volume but
it remained "off" ) but it let me see immediately that was the issue. I
opened Kmix, clicked, closed and done.
