Last week's MonadLUG meeting

Great meeting. Small attendance (8), but interesting folks, and a
smaller group means more time to chat.

One member spoke. He is involved in a leadership course in school and
is interested in developing a project where GNHLUG volunteers can
refit older donated machines and install configure and support them
in various public venues like libraries and elderly housing. Gathered
names for contact when/if the project gets off the ground.

I talked about the bylaws (everyone was on the mailing list, so had
seen the announcements).

Several good concerns were raised that I think we should all be
thinking about:

- E&O for the BoD: Errors and Omissions (E&O) and Directors &
Officers (D&O) policies are available for Boards of Directors of non-
profits to provide some shield of their personal assets from the
costs of litigation and allegations of misbehaviors and malfeasance
from mistakes made (I'm not an insurance professional, nor do I play
one on TV, so please butt in if you have a better understanding). Our
initial app to NH indicates we have no coverage (true), and the sums
we'll be dealing with initially are pretty small, we're unlikely to
be adding employees, so I don't think this is a problem now, and just
needs to be kept on a list of worries should GNHLUG take on a larger
or riskier project. There's some interesting discussion here:

- Sources of money and expenses: Great question. I expect most monies
will come from the same sources they do now - an interested volunteer
reaches into his/her pocket. There's a $25 app fee for NH, a $150 app
fee if we choose to go for IRS 501(c)3 status. it may make sense to
establish some formal levels of donations/dues and recognition for them.

The main demonstration was of The Open CD http://www.theopencd.org,
which pretty much demonstrates itself; I just clicked on the various
options. Ran it in Windows 98 to show all of the Free Software
available for installation, and rebooted into the LiveCD version of
Ubuntu (with nolapic noapic acpi=off for the old laptop) to show the
many features included in the "try it out" version of Ubuntu. A very
impressive disk - and did we mention Free? Bill Sconce and I passed
out about a dozen copies of the CD.
