Yeah, I know, but this was supposed to be a "quick proof-of-concept"
and I needed/wanted something quick and lightweight (he says after an
entire day of playing with QEMU :)

Is VMWare capable of using more than 3 disk images *and* a cdrom
image?  One of the failings of QEMU so far is the inability of
specifying 4 hd image files *and* a cdrom image file...
