I've used USB serial adapters to connect to my old Sun system consoles from
Linux. I'd imagine they could work for modems as well. They run $15.
I've only run it at 9600 baud and I don't know how they do at faster speeds.
I've also used my blackberry via usb to tether over 3G if that's an option.
